Is Liposuction for Me?

Planning your Procedure and Recovery

The best candidates for liposuction are men and women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by fat deposits that won't respond to diet or exercise. The procedure works to remove unwanted fat and bring the body into proportion. Liposuction often provides dramatic improvements in appearance.

Commonly treated areas on men are the chest, abdomen, and "love handles," while for women we often treat the outer and inner thighs, knees, abdomen, arms, hips, and "saddle bags." The chin is a commonly treated area in men and women of all ages.

The majority of patients we see tend to be very good candidates for liposuction. During your consultation, our plastic surgeon will examine you and assess the quality of your skin. For most patients, their skin is healthy and strong and will react very well to being treated with liposuction.

In some cases, other plastic surgery techniques work well. Since liposuction does not remove skin or create long scars, the skin must have the ability to shrink following the procedure. If you have stretch marks, liposuction may not be the best option. When stretch marks are present, the skin is usually stretched beyond its ability to tighten again. In this case, liposuction may result in hanging skin and a tummy tuck, thigh lift, or arm lift often provides the better option. If you have a hernia in your abdomen, you may not be a candidate for the procedure. When your plastic surgeon examines you, we can make recommendations for the best approach to getting your desired results.

Liposuction certainly can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon. With everyone working together as a team, liposuction can provide wonderful results that dramatically improve quality of life.
